48 Hours in Dreamy Bergamo: A Laid-Back Gem in Northern Italy
If you’re planning a trip to Northern Italy, your itinerary probably includes Milan, Florence, Venice, or Lake Como. But here’s a little spot: just 50 minutes from Milan, tucked into the foothills of the Alps, is Bergamo—a city that feels like stepping into a living postcard.
Over the course of 48 hours, you’ll fall under the spell of this charming hilltop town, where medieval towers rise above cobblestone streets, sunset aperitivos stretch into the evening, and life unfolds at a wonderfully slow pace.
First Stop: Views from the Venetian Walls
Your journey begins in the Città Alta (Upper Town)—the walled historic center perched high above modern-day Bergamo. Take the funicular or the scenic walk up, and suddenly you’re in another era.
From the Venetian Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the view stretches across the Lombardy countryside to the distant Alps. It’s peaceful. Panoramic. Magical. And without the crowds of Milan, Venice or Florence.
Stroll & Soak It In: Cobblestone Magic
The Upper Town is made for wandering. Stone-paved streets, hidden courtyards, and artisan boutiques invite you to slow down. There’s no rush here—just the joy of discovery.
You’ll hear street musicians playing in sunny piazzas and smell fresh focaccia wafting from bakeries. Go into a gelateria for a cone of stracciatella (fun fact: I learned that it was invented right here in Bergamo!), and just wander.
Mornings, Markets, and Aperitivo Evenings
Life in Bergamo moves to a rhythm all its own. In the mornings, locals linger over cappuccinos and croissant in sunlit cafés. Newspapers are read. Conversations are unhurried.
By evening, the city transforms. Piazza Vecchia and Piazza Matteotti buzz with locals and travelers alike. Grab a seat at a wine bar, order a buffalo burrata and prosciutto platter, sip some Franciacorta (Lombardy’s sparkling wine), and just be. It’s Italy at its most authentic.

Why Bergamo Deserves a Spot on Your Italy Itinerary
Bergamo is Italy without the filter—romantic, walkable, soulful, and delightfully under the radar. While others are jostling for space in the big-name cities, you’ll be enjoying a slow cappuccino under medieval arches, or watching the sunset from ancient walls in peace.
If you’re dreaming of Italy’s “la dolce vita”—this is where you’ll find it.
Quick Tips for Visiting Bergamo
Getting there:
Trains run frequently from Milano Centrale (approx. 50 mins).Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. However, I usually travel just before or after the ideal season. It is more cost-effective and provides greater opportunities to interact with the locals, which is a priority for me.
Must-try food:
Stracciatella gelato
Casconcelli (Bergamo’s local stuffed pasta)
Local wines like Valcalepio and Franciacorta
Good to know:
Bergamo Airport (Orio al Serio) is a hub for low-cost flights from across Europe—perfect for a budget-friendly getaway.
